Entrepreneurship and perfectionism don’t mix
I grew up believing hard work equals success. Study hard, get good grades, and go to a good college. Study hard again and then get a good job. It was a checklist that made my life easy. Until I decided between another full-time job or putting on my big girl panties and launching a business.
I followed my gut and sided with the daredevil in me. Except this time, there was no checklist. Art school did NOT teach you how to run a business. So I tried to squeeze myself into this idea of a “professional entrepreneur” as I had no clue where to begin. It was actually a mask of perfection because I cared too much about what my old coworkers would think.
Investing in my business took the pressure off of me to be perfect. Coaches helped me to focus my energy. Contractors helped me check things off my do list. Accountability buddies showed me I’m not alone. Surrounding myself with a supportive community allowed me to be more compassionate with myself.

Seeing your product out in the wild is one of the coolest things in the world. I remember seeing someone wearing a pair of rain boots I designed. I ran off the subway saying “I designed those!” She probably thought I was just another crazy lady in NYC.
